In the five works that make up No Man is an Island and other works, we witness interactions, simultaneously strange and tender, between younger and older men. Jesper Just’s cast of men act out obscure narratives, with seemingly spontaneously actions taking the place of spoken dialog. Ambiguous relationships between characters playfully disrupt Hollywood versions of masculinity through Just’s educated blend of cinema and opera.

JESPER JUST is a Copenhagen-based artist. He has exhibited throughout Europe, most notably at the Royal Museum of Fine Art (Copenhagen) and the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (Torino, Italy). YYZ is pleased to present Just’s work as part of Harbourfront Centre’s SUPERDANISH: Newfangled Danish Culture, an exploration of current Danish Culture, September 28 to December 2004 featuring 200 artists in more than 130 events throughout Toronto.

With special thanks to Galleri Christina Wilson.
