RYAN SLUGGETT | TYRANNY
SATURDAY 08 SEPTEMBER 2007 – SATURDAY 20 OCTOBER 2007

OPENING RECEPTION | FRIDAY 07 SEPTEMBER 2007, 8:00PM – 11:00PM

YYZ presents Vancouver artist RYAN SLUGGETT‘S Tyranny in partnership with the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival following its premiere presentation at the 2007 Montral Biennale. In Tyranny, a pendulum with a speaker swings above three floor mounted monitors that each present animated videos composed from over 5,000 digital stills. Sluggett’s figures present innovative variations on the telltale styles of Modernist portraiture from the early twentieth century in wholly new amalgams and interpretations. The images come together over and over again, in ever changing stories as the soundtrack swings in syncopation. The images and sounds create a flow into which a viewer can jump in at any and every point but never at the same one twice. This presentation has been organized by Wayne Baerwaldt Director, Curator of the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art + Design.
