THICK2D is a collection of recent work from lateral architecture addressing
“room-sized” installations. Each piece acts as a prototype reconceiving basic domestic issues of storage, light, rest, and consumption. The prototypes capitalize on the idea of material thickness through nesting, stacking, stitching, and excavating. These methods explore the resistance, dexterity and atmosphere of common materials such as foam, felt, plywood, paper, and acrylic. Sometimes bordering on the absurd, the prototypes question how we engage with objects in our material culture.

Lateral Architecture would like to thank Imola Brczi, Neeraj Bhatia, Kelly Doran, Tomek Bartczak and Daniel Rabin.

LATERAL ARCHITECTURE was founded in 2002 by Lola Sheppard and Mason White out of a collaborative desire to expand the boundaries of architectural practice. Lateral Architecture’s work investigates issues of interactivity, adaptability, and temporality operating at multiple scales. Each project is seen both as a custom artifact and a scaleless design strategy. Lateral was the Lefevre Emerging Practitioner at Ohio State University in 2004; selected for the Young Architects Forum from the Architectural League of New York in 2005; selected for the Metis Garden Festival in 2005. Their work has been
featured in exhibitions across North America, and have won or been
shortlisted for several International design competitions. Lola Sheppard is Assistant Professor at University of Waterloo. Mason White teaches at University of Toronto. http://www.lateralarch.com
