HORIZON: Radical Algorithmic Literacy | WORKSHOP

As part of a larger initiative called HORIZON, a series of programs to provide artists learning opportunities that contribute to professional growth, The Power Plant and YYZ Artists’ Outlet co-present this workshop.

Elisha Lim, digital scholar and artist, will explain to participants in three 45-minute sessions how Instagram and Facebook algorithms work, and for whom. This is not a self-branding bootcamp – these workshops will equip artists with the tools, critical lenses and understanding to harness algorithms for their sustainable, long-term collective needs.

ABOUT ELISHA LIM
Elisha Lim is an award-winning queer film maker and graphic novelist whose theories on social media algorithms have been published in C Magazine, Documenta, Bitch Magazine, TEDxUofT and in academic settings like MIT, the Association of Internet Researchers, and the peer reviewed journal Social Media + Society. Lim is currently writing a PhD on Digital Media at the University of Toronto.

ABOUT HORIZON
In Fall 2018, The Power Plant and YYZ Artists’ Outlet teamed up with seven other contemporary visual art and film organizations in Toronto for a two-year initiative, called HORIZON, funded with an Open Door grant from the Toronto Arts Council. During the first phase, the nine partner organizations conducted focus groups and town halls to gather information about the needs of emerging and established artists in and around Toronto. Now into the second phase, the organizations are developing and offering programs that address some of the artists’ needs.
